Jamie Beck welcomes readers back to Sterling Canyon, Colorado, where a disgraced but charming ski instructor falls in love while trying to redeem himself.
Folks in Sterling Canyon know that small towns have long memories. Two years after the DUI that injured a pedestrian, Andy Randall is still making amends. He hopes the Christmas spirit will help him get rehired as a ski instructor, but that job will come with conditions. He can’t afford another mistake, which is exactly what making a play for his former boss and friend, Nikki Steele, would be.
Nikki races down double black diamonds and hikes mountains better than most guys, unafraid of tumbling down the slopes. But trusting the guy who once shot her down could end in a fall that actually hurts, especially when she’d have to vouch for him with her boss. Still, the resort needs another instructor to handle the holiday tourists, and Andy’s sexy grin and relaxed charisma make him hard to resist.
With both of their reputations now on the line, can Andy convince Nikki that the second chance he wants isn’t only about the job?
**Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Being a blogger definitely has its perks. Getting to review books is one of them, and it is an especially perky perk, when you find new authors to love. Joyfully His was my introduction to Jamie Beck, and I can say with confidence, that though it was my first Beck book, it most certainly will not be my last.
I don’t even know where to start with how much I loved about this book, which is actually part of a series, that you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be reading the rest of. That said, I won’t get into every single part of this book that I loved, or we’d be here for way too long, but I’ll tick some of my favorite things for you:
Imperfect characters you will love. If you spend any amount of time reading my reviews, you’ll know that the thing that makes a book for me is the characters. If a writer can give me a character I love and root for, than it won’t matter how ridiculous or unbelievable, or even bad, a story is, I’ll read the whole thing because the character becomes my friend. And Jamie Beck does that.
But not only are the characters in this book great, they are REAL. Their imperfections aren’t just typical “book imperfections” like being insecure or being a tomboy (though there are THOSE things, and they aren’t really imperfections as much as they are designed strengths, which is part of what I love), but the imperfections are serious, significant, teeter on the edge of making you decide if this would be a deal-breaker in reality or not kind of imperfections. And as the author makes you dig deep to decide, she perfectly cuts into a part of you that can no longer just treat these characters as the fictional beings they are, it makes them people you care about, and will fight for. And because I’m convinced Jamie Beck is so great, it’s no surprise, when she does JUST THAT, making you fight for them, just like they fight for each other.
There are moments in the book where you’re sure you know what is going to happen next because YOU are about to do it yourself! But that doesn’t stop Beck from throwing the occasional twist into this story, and of course, it just makes it that much more fun and exciting to flip the pages.
And don’t even get me started on the delicate and gentle sexiness that Beck perfects in this book. Don’t get me wrong, there is steam—plenty of it—but it’s just enough, in my opinion. Not enough to make this erotic, but definitely provocative, and that’s without a doubt, my cup of tea.
Add to all of this, that the story has a Christmas-theme, takes place in a snowy, small, ski-resort town, and includes other characters that you can’t also help but love, and this book is nothing shy of the perfect read!
